  • Just A Test

One of my earlier poems this piece is done in a very ‘rhymey’ kind of style. The line ‘green monkey viruses’ refers to how early in the AIDS crisis scientists were trying to say that a Black Haitian was bitten by the green monkey. That was more racism than anything else but that is a glimpse into how I tend to put these little ‘nuggets’ in my poems for you to dig into and discover more information on yourself. Enjoy.

As we journey through life we will fall. We will trip up. We will make mistakes and at least a few BIGGIES! The question is what will we do when we fall. In this poem we have some examples through metaphor of “falling” and at the end of climbing.

Are we allowed to be? Are we allowed to be ourselves to explore who we are without the judgementalism and control of a community largely ignorant of our situations?

This poem is one of my most personal. I speak from a place of frustration and exasperation in this piece. Perhaps it will resonate with you.

This poem was inspired by my daughters. I wrote this as an exhortation for them to speak their mind. Let their voices be heard if there is something bothering them. Speak truth to power even if that power is a parent.

Poet Brother Dash has become the first Muslim recording artist specializing in Spoken Word Poetry to release an album that can be planted in soil and bloom into wildflowers.

As poets, as artists we are trying to bring people to higher consciousness. We are trying to illuminate. And by extension all righteous people are trying to bring some righteousness to the world. It’s about reaching out to souls. Soul to Soul.

Message To A Muslim Artist: The 5 W’s+1

…But what Black Muslim does Qawwali? How many Latino Muslims do Arabic nasheeds? White British Muslims have a 100 year old history of Muslim hymns written and composed by White converts! If you are a Chicano Muslim sister that does devotional odes from your cultural reality and not Pakistan’s or Egypt’s then what (where) is your space?
