Brother Dash

Brother Dash is a New Jersey based Spoken Word poet, writer and photographer. Known most prominently for his poetry Brother Dash brings an energetic and rhythmic style of delivery to his powerful and thought provoking lyrics. A graduate of Rutgers University with dual major in English and Sociology Dash’s academic background is evident in poetry but in a distinctly “non ivory tower” way. A Brooklyn, NY native Brother Dash creates a unique synergy between traditional poetry and street prose bringing an often either raw emotion or comedic wit in his flow. An experienced spoken word poet since the 1990′s he has performed in venues with audiences numbering from 3 all the way up to 30,000! A well known artist in both the U.S. and the U.K. Brother Dash has been featured on BBC Radio, Islam Channel, Al-Arabiya, Peace TV, Bridges TV, and on media outlets in the U.S., Canada, England, Africa, and The Middle East. He has performed at the Manchester Evening News Arena, the ExCeL Centre in London, State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ, the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago, Yale University, Columbia University, Princeton University, New York University, Rutgers University, Cambridge University and many other colleges and theaters. In terms of content Brother Dash’s poetry incorporates themes on spirituality, society, race, gender, culture and religion.
In addition to his poetry Brother Dash has emerged as a prolific writer and social critic bringing up issues either rarely or never discussed open in Muslim communities in particular mainly on the subjects alluded to in his poetry. In 2010 he began to explore his long passion for photography and has begun showcasing his work online for wider distribution in 2011.
