Spoken Soul is Brother Dash’s 2nd full length album. Released in 2009 Spoken Soul is a much more personal and vulnerable album than Dash’s first full album Poetically Speaking. Issues in relationships are clearly present in the poems Can I Breathe? and Don’t Wanna as are poems of personal redemption, triumph and understanding as in the title track Spoken Soul. Keeping in Dash’s style of bringing to light communal issues he focuses on the tenuous individual relationship between culture and religion in Masjid Marauders. Dash gives an ode to women in the poem The Most Beautifullest and includes for the first time the only poem on the album with music in the title track Spoken Soul which is a pleasant sounding ode to the need for one’s soul to speak. Also noteworthy is the absence of any image of Brother Dash on the album a conscious decision by the artist. The album is available now as a CD and on iTunes/AmazonMp3/Napster.

Brother Dash’s first CD is a sort of “mini-album” with 6 tracks featuring the still popular Muslimah which is an ode to Muslim women, Headline Islam which is about reclaiming the Muslim narrative and the ever popular Boom Chicka Boom which deals with relationships. The album was independently produced by Dash himself and was distributed in North America and the UK making it the first English language all Spoken Word poetry CD to be carried by Muslim retailers globally. | |
